Tchaikowski piano concerto No 1
The first time German conductor, pianist and composer Hans von B√ľlow heard the piece he described it as a ‚Äútrue gem‚ÄĚ with ‚Äúunsurpassed originality, such nobility, such strength (‚Ķ) such a maturity of form, such style‚ÄĒits design and execution, with such consonant harmonies‚ÄĚ ‚Äď don‚Äôt you just wish to flow in these sounds and experience the fascination found in Tchaikovsky‚Äôs music? Highly-acclaimed Russian pianist Pavel Kolesnikov will perform Tchaikovsky‚Äôs First Piano Concerto that is not only one of Tchaikovsky‚Äôs most popular compositions, but also one of the best-known piano concertos in the world.
The second part of the performance will be no less impressive with Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony telling a dramatic story of Stalin’s oppressive regime pressures in 1937. Artists under the Communist rule had a restricted freedom of expression and Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony is a controversial example of artistic expression created to superficially satisfy the officials while reflecting on the real hardship the audience related to. The premiere of the Fifth Symphony was a huge success receiving an ovation that lasted over half an hour brilliantly illustrating the conflicting period of time and celebrating the power of arts.
