The Strawberry Festival
Visit the Strawberry Festival in Mgarr
Mgarr is one of the most picturesque villages in Malta. Located in the west of Mosta, Mgarr is rich in agriculture, farmland and vineyards. For thirteen years, a special event has been happening in the heart of this rural village – Festa Frawli, The Strawberry Festival. This festival captures the hearts of both locals and tourists alike and it’s all happening this Sunday on the 28th of April, 2019.
Organised by the Local Council of Mgarr, together with ‘Kummissjoni Lejla Mgarrija’, this popular festival happens with the help of hundreds of volunteers. The Strawberry Festival is the perfect way to bring to the forefront this delicious fruit that is known for its many benefits such as having many nutrients, vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, folate, potassium, manganese, dietary fibre and magnesium.
Mr Paul Vella, the Mgarr Local Council Mayor, shares his insight on the festival and Mgarr.
About The Strawberry Festival In Malta
The Strawberry Festival is a family-friendly event that has been happening for thirteen years. Mgarr is known for its impeccable strawberries. Farmers take great care when growing this fragile fruit as it is very delicate and takes a lot of time to be properly cultivated until it reaches its final product.
It all started as a one-time event when the Mgarr community wanted to promote strawberries that were always associated with this rural village. However, thanks to all the volunteers, the festival did so well that it continued to grow in the event that it is today.
The event always happens sometime around Easter time – either before this religious feast or after, so that it does not clash. Even though nowadays the strawberry season is exponentially longer, the fruit reaches its peach around the beginning of spring until the summer days.
Strawberry Dishes and Drinks
So, what can you expect if you attend this year’s edition of The Strawberry Festival? Apart from the fresh strawberries on sale from local farmers, there are various strawberry dishes and drinks that you can try to get your hands on.
Various stalls will be present at the festival selling all sorts of strawberry-related delicacies such as strawberry ravioli, a strawberry version of the local pastizzi, crepes with strawberries and chocolate, fresh smoothies, strawberry spring rolls, arancini, and more!
The chefs responsible for creating these dishes always try to come up with something different every year so that frequent visitors to this festival will always have something new to look forward to and taste. You can even find strawberry related souvenirs to take back home to your loved ones such as strawberry jams and wines.
Events and Activities at the Festival
The festival starts at 10 am and is paused for a small break at 10.30am for a mass at the Mgarr Local Parish Church. At around noon, there will be the cutting of the cake to commemorate the event. The Strawberry Festival will take place all throughout Sunday until 5 pm.
Local artists will be performing folklore music using traditional instruments. There will also be a DJ this year to aid in the entertainment. The Mgarr community also tries to involve kids to join in the strawberry festivities. Their painting and strawberry exhibitions will be displayed in the Mgarr Primary School.
You can also enjoy cultural walks around Mgarr. This village is exceptional for trekking and hiking. On the day of the festival, you can take one (or all) of the four guided walks happening on different hours. You can choose your preferred walk on the day as there will be maps with the highlighted trails. Experience four different pictures of Mgarr!
How to Get to the Festival?
Volunteers are going to be helping with allocating designated parking spaces in Mgarr for the festival. Public transport towards Mgarr (buses 44, 238 and 101 from Cirkewwa) are going to be more frequent on the day. There is also going to be a shuttle service from Ta’Qali to ease the possibility of getting to the festival.
